Description

The foldaway sewing machine my mum had was a Singer, and as a youngster, I was always captivated by it. I still remember the beautiful gold lettering on its solid black body, which stood out in sharp contrast, adding an air of elegance to the machine.

The sleekness of its design was almost swan-like, with graceful curves and smooth lines that made it a sculptural piece of art. This print is a celebration of that cherished memory, capturing the essence of a time when craftsmanship was as much about beauty as it was about function.

In creating this print, I wanted to honour not only the memory of my mum’s creativity but also the artistry and dedication that went into making such timeless objects. The machine’s design was more than just practical—it was a testament to the skill and vision of its creators. The gold lettering, so meticulously applied, spoke of a time when even the smallest details were given the utmost care and attention.

This brightly coloured giclee print brings that memory to life with vivid hues and intricate details. Using 11 pigment colours, each layer is carefully applied to capture the richness and depth of the original machine. An optimizer layer adds a subtle sheen, enhancing the colours and giving the print a luminous quality. The print is made on 100% smooth cotton, providing a soft yet durable canvas that preserves the vibrancy and clarity of the artwork.

Whether you’re a lover of vintage design, a sewing enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates fine art, this print is a perfect addition to your collection. It serves as a reminder of a bygone era when machines were not just tools but works of art, and when the simple act of sewing could bring joy and inspiration.

I went to art college back in the 1970s, where I received a BA 1st (Hons) in Fine Art before completing an MA at the Royal College of Art in the film school. I then worked in film and video production and finally the education sector before early retirement. The main influences on me, during these early years, were the artists, such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Jim Dine. The New York scene seemed to combine and challenge what art, performance and film could be in a way that has left a permanent mark on my psyche. This cocktail of Pop Art imagery and Abstract Expressionist mark-making seems to be where I feel most comfortable.
