Lemongrass is mostly a perennial plant. It grows in several states in India. India began cultivating lemongrass commercially after its introduction nearly a century ago. The oil extraction is one such commercial use. After extracting oil, producers often discard the residual grass as a by-product. However, they can repurpose it through upcycling.
About tree free paper
After extracting oil from lemongrass, manufacturers steam the remaining grass and craft it into sheets of paper. Both types of lemongrass paper are 100% natural, showcasing a great example of up-cycling. These eco-friendly papers are ideal for printing, writing, and packaging. Moreover, lemongrass has demonstrated significant potential as a sustainable material for paper production, thereby effectively transforming waste into a valuable resource.
The process of extraction somehow seems to strengthen the fibres for paper making. The fibres are beautiful and strong and turn into smooth resilient paper. Cotton fibres are added to further smoothen the paper.
People often burn this residual waste, contributing to pollution and landfill overflow, making it an excellent example of upcycling.
