Sustainable Crafting: How Prickly Pears Is Making a Difference

Prickly Pears is a brand that was born as a dream of two sisters in the Hatay region of southern Türkiye. It supports local production in this region, raises awareness about cultural sustainability and the continuation of traditional craftsmanship. They are trading at the Urban Makers Christmas Market on Saturday November 29th.

In a world that celebrates speed, we’ve chosen a slower rhythm; one that honors time, touch, and tradition. At Prickly Pears, crafting is more than creating objects; it’s preserving a way of life. Every piece we make begins in the hands of Anatolian artisans who continue a heritage that has shaped generations before us.

We believe sustainability begins with people; with the weavers who pass on their knowledge, the communities who keep these crafts alive, and those who choose to value meaning over mass production.

Each towel, robe, or cloth carries a quiet resistance to a system that forgets the human behind the product. It holds the story of care, of patience, of something made to last.

Our production is small, deliberate, and transparent. We use natural fibers, avoid chemicals, and respect the balance between making and preserving. Every decision, from the threads we choose to the pace we keep, reflects our desire to protect both nature and culture.

For us, sustainability is not a trend but a way of being. It lives in the smallest details, in natural materials, minimal waste, and limited production that honors both maker and material. It’s also in the relationships we build, with the artisans who weave our fabrics, the customers who choose consciously, and the communities that keep traditions alive.

Guided by this belief, we’ll be at the Urban Makers Christmas Market, on Saturday November 29th. We will be sharing the stories of the artisans whose hands bring our textiles to life.

For us, this market is a reminder that sustainability isn’t only about materials; it’s about people, traditions, and shared stories that last far beyond the season.

If you find yourself in London this December, come say hello at our stand. Touch the textures, hear the stories, and find something made with heart. Because this Christmas, we invite you to gift differently; with intention, with care, and with love for the planet.

With love, The Prickly Pears Sisters
