Description
Art Deco London – The Old Arsenal Stadium Illustrated Art Print.
London has some of the most striking pieces of Art Deco architecture. And the magnificent Art Deco Facade of the East Stand is one. I first came across this beautiful structure, just by chance while biking to Finsbury Park.
The East Stand, containing the famous Marble Halls, is a Grade II listed building. Built in 1936 to compliment the Victorian houses in the surrounding area, it was constructed in the Art Deco style of architecture which was popular between the wars.
The Highbury project was ambitious in its scale and reach, the first stand completed being the West Stand, designed by Claude Waterlow Ferrier and William Binnie in the Art Deco style which opened in 1932. On 5 November the same year the local Tube station was renamed from Gillespie Road to Arsenal.
