Description
There are many older businesses in this artwork for example The Majestic Theatre, Woolworths, Lomey Town School, and Jones and Lloyd where some of my family worked many years ago. You will also find a Fish and Chip Shop, the local Market, one of the many Charity Shops, the Butchers, plus Jay’s Bar and The Wizard and Glass which are two well known boozers. There are also references to nearby places like the Merry Hill Centre, Dudley, Old Hill and Birmingham.
Much of this piece is based upon Cradley Heath’s industrial past such as the people making nails and chains which is what the town was known for. There is much more to be found including the local train station bridge, the Black Country Bugle being read, the Black Country flag, my old Bus the 213, the Liberal Club and even a nod to the town’s past with a few Anglo-Saxons making an appearance.
Bonus fact: On the right you will see Cradley Heath Baptist Church (built 1833). This was the first Christian Church meeting in Cradley Heath, and has the distinction of having the first Afro-Caribbean minister in Britain, Rev. George Cosens in 1837 (he is looking out the window if you look carefully).Remember, every customer has the option of having themselves or a loved one drawn in to their very own artwork! Immortalized as a cartoon forever. Truly personalised!
